Barnstormers sign wide receiver Ellingworth

The Iowa Barnstormers have announced their first signing of this off-season, reaching an agreement with wide receiver Tommy Ellingworth.

The former Augustana College speedster spent the past two seasons with the Barnstormers mostly as a member of the practice squad. During the 2010 season in which Barnstormer receivers had trouble staying healthy, Ellingworth recorded 23 receptions for 277 yards and 7 touchdowns in just five games, quickly becoming a favorite target of quarterback Ryan Vena, until his season ended prematurely due to a foot injury he suffered in July. He was also a key contributor on special teams.

Ellingworth had a standout collegiate career as a wide receiver at Augustana College, finishing with 211 receptions for 2,398 yards and running a 4.37 in the 40-yard dash on Pro Day in South Dakota. Some of his accolades include being named All-North Central Conference 2ndTeam and All-North Central Conference WR Team and was also a National Qualifier for Track and Field in 2006.

The Redwood Falls, Minnesota native will be one of 35 players invited to the Iowa Barnstormers training camp in February. With the Arena Football League free-agent signing period well under way, we’ll be seeing more activity from the Barnstormers as they prepare to improve on their first year back in the top level of arena football and regain their rightful place as an arena football powerhouse in 2011.
