Regg Simon back with the Des Moines Buccaneers

The Des Moines Buccaneers announced today that Regg Simon is returning to Des Moines to be the head coach and general manager of the Buccaneers.

For the past two seasons, Simon has been an assistant coach at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. He previously coached in the Buccaneers organization from 2003 to 2008. As the head coach, he led the Buccaneers to a Clark Cup championship in the 2005-2006 season, developing players like Kyle Okposo and Trevor Lewis, who were both taken in the first round of the 2006 NHL draft. Simon also won "General Manager of the Year" in the same season.

Bucs owner Gil Peled said, “This is a great day for the Buccaneers organization and a great day for our fans.”

Iowa Barnstormers GM John Pettit, who also happens to be the special assistant to the Des Moines Buccaneers, was intrumental in helping coordinate bringing Coach Simon back to Des Moines. During the time that Simon previously coached the Bucs, Pettit was with the Iowa Stars AHL hockey team organization, also in Des Moines, and never lost touch with the coach after he left. “When Mike(Guentzel)informed us that he was taking the UNO job, I knew there was one call we had to make before we looked anywhere else, and that was to Regg”, said Pettit.

Simon says, “I’ve had success in Des Moines as a player, and as a coach, and I’m excited about the opportunity to bring the Buccaneers organization back to a level that the fans expect and deserve.”

Welcome back to Des Moines, Coach Simon! It's going to be a great season!

Des Moines Blaze headed to World Bowl IV

In just their first year, Des Moines Blaze have been ripping the World Football League a new one all season long. They finished their regular season at 7-1 outscoring their opponents 300-60, and have burned their way through the playoffs, most recently burying the St. Louis Bulldogs with a decisive 50-21 victory in the semi-final round.

Their opponent in World Bowl IV is the Oklahoma Thunder, who have won the previous three World Bowls and finished this season 10-0, outscoring their victims 372-63. Yikes! It's a matchup of the school bully versus the new kid.

The Blaze will travel to Tulsa for World Bowl IV this Saturday, July 31, at 7 PM in what could be an epic display of offensive firepower. Follow Blaze Football.net for more info!

New rivalry for the Iowa Barnstormers in 2011

Iowa Barnstormers Examiner

The Iowa Barnstormers will have to battle for air supremacy in 2011 as the Kansas City Brigade return to the Arena Football League! The Brigade franchise has been dormant since the original Arena Football League was shut down to reorganize in 2009, but the AFL announced the return of the team for the 2011 season as the newly configured Arena Football League continues to grow. The close proximity between Des Moines and Kansas City should make this a very spirited rivalry, since it’s likely that fans of both teams will make the 2-3 hour trip down, or up, Interstate 35 to support their teams, very much like the old hockey rivalry between the Iowa Stars/Chops and the Omaha Aksarben Knights.

The Brigade originally became a franchise in 2006 in the AFL and soon became very popular in Kansas City among fans, bringing in crowds of more than 12,000, however since the Barnstormers competed in the Arena Football 2 league at the time, the two teams never met on the field.

Having a well-supported rival so close to the Barnstormers should be mutually beneficial to both clubs, both financially and in attendance, thanks to some overlapping fan base as well as those rabid road warriors that will travel to support their team and perhaps heckle a few of the home team’s fans. Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines and the Sprint Center in Kansas City are two of the newest, most state-of-the-art facilities in the league, which makes going to the games just that much more enjoyable.

During the absense of the Arena Football League in 2009 and 2010, many football-starved Brigade fans made the trip from Kansas City to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines to watch and support the Barnstormers in the AF2, some even wearing their Brigade gear. Is it safe to assume that those folks will be back to Wells Fargo Arena in 2011? Probably, but this time they won’t be cheering for the Barnstormers.

Let the dog fights begin! Go ‘Stormers!
